During my visit to Nouryon, I learned about the innovative ways the company is addressing sustainability in the plastics and polymer industries. One of the most striking facts shared during the presentation was that only about 14.6% of global plastic waste is recycled. The majority either ends up in landfills or gets burned for energy, which isn’t ideal from an environmental perspective. Nouryon, however, is committed to changing this narrative through advanced chemical solutions and sustainable practices.

Nouryon’s approach to sustainability goes beyond just chemical production. They’re actively working to make plastics last longer and be more reusable. One key innovation involves improving the mechanical properties of recycled plastics to ensure they can be used in high-quality applications again. Often, recycled plastics degrade in strength and durability, but Nouryon is developing additives that help maintain or even enhance these qualities after recycling.

Instead of the traditional linear lifecycle of plastics—from production to disposal—Nouryon is promoting a circular approach. By integrating recycling processes directly into polymer production, they aim to reduce the need for new raw materials and extend the life of existing plastics. This shift is crucial for minimizing plastic waste and reducing the environmental impact of polymer products.

One major challenge in plastic recycling is contamination. Mixed materials and impurities make it hard to produce high-quality recycled products. Nouryon is addressing this by creating additives that stabilize the mechanical properties of recycled polymers. This innovation means that recycled plastics can be used in more demanding applications, from packaging to automotive parts, without compromising performance.

Another issue is the inconsistency of recycled plastic quality. Exposure to sunlight and outdoor conditions can make plastics brittle, but Nouryon’s chemical solutions help maintain the flexibility and strength needed for reuse. This approach not only helps reduce waste but also promotes more consistent and reliable recycled materials.

Sustainability in the plastics industry is about more than just reducing waste—it’s about rethinking how we use resources. By focusing on quality improvements and integrating sustainable practices into their production processes, Nouryon is making significant strides toward a circular economy. Their commitment to innovation is helping to reduce reliance on virgin plastic and minimize environmental impact.

Visiting Nouryon was an eye-opening experience. It was inspiring to see how a company can innovate to tackle the plastic waste problem, and it left me motivated to explore sustainable practices in my future career. It’s clear that making plastics more sustainable isn’t just a goal—it’s a responsibility that companies like Nouryon are taking seriously.
