Note to self: Next time, pack extra socks… and maybe a kayak.

Day ____ (I forget) ! I ended today with some lovely soggy shoes and sore legs, but no worries I have stories for days. The cloud forest in Monteverde was such a fun and unforgettable experience. From the moment we stepped onto the mist-covered trails, it felt like we had entered another world. Everything was so lush and green. One of the most exciting parts was seeing monkeys swinging through the trees. At one point, we took a wrong turn and thought we were lost, which added a little thrill to the adventure. Thankfully, we ended up right where we started in the first place! Close call.

During the tour and lecture at the Monteverde Institute, our guide explained the three main aspects that shape Monteverde: the environment, social factors, and the economy. He showed us how these areas are deeply connected. For example, the economy relies heavily on eco-tourism, which means preserving the environment is essential. At the same time, the social well-being of the community depends on sustainable jobs and education, which are supported by the income from tourism. Any damage to one area would cause problems for the others. One peaceful stop on our tour was the meditation garden. It was a quiet, beautiful space full of rocks with words that described loved ones who had passed away. The guide encouraged us to listen to the sounds of nature and just be present, which was a really special moment during the trip. It made me realize how often and how common it is to take the nature of the world for granted.

When thinking about the challenges Monteverde faces, some are unique. For instance, they need to balance a growing tourism industry with environmental protection. But there are also challenges that it shares with the rest of Costa Rica, such as deforestation, climate change, and finding ways to improve the quality of life for local communities.

If I had to prioritize one of the three areas, environmental, social, or economic, I would choose the environment. Without a healthy environment, tourism would decline, animals would lose their habitats, and the beauty that makes Monteverde special would be lost. Protecting the environment supports both the economy and the people who live there, making it the foundation of everything else. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings! Here’s a pic of us just absolutely loving the torrential downpour! 🙂
