Day 1 – Spezi and Spätzle: A Tasty Welcome

After a long overnight flight with very little sleep, I finally made it to Germany! We landed at the Munich airport early in the morning and made the hour-long drive to Augsburg. Once we arrived we explored the city and went to the plaza for lunch. I tried Spezi for the first time which is a mix of cola and orange soda. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was really good and refreshing!

Later we took a walking tour around the city and I was immediately impressed by how beautiful the buildings were. The Hoher Dom stood out the most to me. The outside looked like something from a storybook but the inside was even more amazing with high ceilings and stained glass that caught the light in the best way. We also got to learn about the Fugger housing which is social housing that has been around for centuries. It was cool to see a place that has been helping people for so long and still looks well cared for.

After the tour we had dinner at a restaurant called Zeughausstuben where I tried Spätzle for the first time. It was cheesy and warm and just the kind of comfort food I needed after such a long day. I am really happy that Augsburg is where we are staying. The town feels peaceful and full of history and. Even though I was tired I had a great first day and I am looking forward to the rest of the trip!
