Today was an early morning to get on the bus and travel to Famagusta from our hotel in Limassol. On our ride, we were given an in-depth explination of the history of Famagusta. Althought it was all interesting, the part that stood out most to me was how when the Turks invaded, they did not actually repopulate Famagusta, but rather plundered it and left it abandoned. I also thought it was interesting how we had to have a turkish guide with us at all times as well.
Walking around Varosi (the abandoned part of Famagusta) was probably the most interesting part of this entire trip. Essentially, the entire city is seemingly frozen in 1975, with many of the buildings having much different styles to modern day. Georgia, our tour guide who used to live in this part of Famagusta, provided us with very emotional stories of her childhood. She pointed out many of the buildings that she used to visit in her youth, which was very surreal since many of them have not changed in the last 50 years.
