Day 6: Free Time in Bilbao!

Today was a pretty light day in terms of scheduled programs. Our first and only trip as a group was a visit to the Arriaga theater, where we got to see the whole theater and learn about the history. One of the interesting parts of the the theater that we were able to visit was the widow’s box. This was essentially a really small part of the theater that honestly was like apart of the stage on the side that was made of widows of members of the theater. Even though this area is no longer used today it was interesting to see how much has changed and different cultural perspectives in Spain. Another piece of history I learned about was that this theater is the only one is Europe that is on the second floor. This means that the main stage and all of the seating starts on the second floor of the theater and continues up. The reasoning behind this is that because it sits so close to the river to be cognizant of the flood hazards the architectures decided to start the theater on the second floor in case of flooding.

After the theater it was a free day in Bilbao! I got a Nutella crepe as well as a cafe con leche in Old Town and then proceeded to do some shopping in the Old Town. The rest of the day was filled with more shopping and walking around the city! Today was absolutely gorgeous outside and I was grateful to experience one of Bilbao’s non-ranining days. I even was able to see the European soccer league trophy in one of the stores I passed by as the final match is being held in Bilbao next week. I can’t wait to visit San Sebastian tomorrow!
