An A-maíz-ing Time at Life Monteverde

This morning’s visit to Life Monteverde allowed me to see that Tico’s lifestyle is centered around hard work and a respect for nature. Each day involves early mornings and long hours planting and tending crops and animals. Tico farmers also have to face many challenges like climate change, unpredictable weather, and financial pressures from the government and other social factors. However, despite these obstacles, many farmers stay committed to sustainable practices and find joy in working on the land, spending time with family, and being part of a strong, supportive community. At Life Monteverde farming is more than just a job, it’s a way of living that includes educating others and protecting the environment for future generations to enjoy.

If I were the child of a Tico farmer, I would want to become an environmental engineer or educator because they’re someone who combines science, technology, and tradition to help farms stay strong and sustainable for the future. Tools like solar energy, composting systems, and water recycling could be optimized then taught about to help reduce the environmental impact while improving efficiency.

While at Life Monteverde, we had the opportunity to take part in several hands-on and engaging activities that helped us better understand sustainable farming. We planted corn in their fields, which gave us a direct connection to the land and showed us how much care and effort goes into growing food from the very beginning. We also got to taste freshly brewed coffee made from beans grown right on the farm. One of the most interesting parts of the visit was learning about their bio-fertilization system. We saw how they turn organic and natural materials into nutrient-rich fertilizer, which helps improve soil health without relying on chemical products. This process not only supports plant growth but also helps protect the environment. This experiences helped me see how sustainability is an ongoing process that involves innovation, teamwork, and a commitment to the planet.
