Another early morning today brought us to Aphrodites rock, a beautiful land feature with many round skippable stones. We then travelet to Pathos, a beautiful city with many preserved mosaics. The mosaics were excavated from the mansion of a Roman General who lived in Cyprus, with many of the mosaics being largely in-tact. Georgia, our tour guide, told us how many of these mosaics depicted stories from Ancient Greek Mythology. My personal favorite was one depicting the tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe, in which Thisbe stumbled upon a lion who had recently killed an animal, she was scared and ran away, but the lion had tore a part of her dress in her escape. Her lover, Pyramus, found the lion with blood and a piece of her dress in his mouth, so Pyramus thought the lion had killed her, and committed suicide. Thisbe then found her lover dead, and killed herself as well. I found the differences between this story and Shakespeare’s take quite interesting.
