Peron and Healthcare

Today we toured the neighborhood of Residio and the Recoleta cemetery. We had the morning free, so I walked around the city for a little bit and got some lunch. Today was election day in the province of Buenos Aires so it was cool to see the city against the backdrop of such an important day. Voting is mandatory in Argentina so many of the shops were closed, and the streets were practically empty which showed a different side of the city. During the cemetery tour we saw the tombs of many famous Argentinians including Eva Peron, Luis Angel Firmo, and Guillermo Brown. After the cemetery tour, I went to a market in the park in front of the cemetery.

The past couple of days have focused on Eva and Juan Peron and their influence on the Argentine healthcare system. Juan Peron introduced the public healthcare system while also simultaneously giving the unions enough power to open their own hospitals and insurance companies. Peron expanded healthcare access and infrastructure to many citizens and reduced the social gradient in healthcare inequality. Juan Peron played a crucial role in bringing healthcare to Argentina and the current healthcare system today reflects many of the decisions he made while in power.
