Plus3 Korea 5/16/25

Today we went to Yonsei University to tour the grounds and an alumni’s lab. We went to the Sinchon campus which is the oldest of the three Yonsei campuses. It was where the founder Horace Grant Underwood began the missionary school to further the education of Koreans. When we arrived at the university we went to their cafeteria to grab lunch, they had lots of good-looking options but I went with a pork noodle soup. After grabbing lunch, we went to the global lounge to meet our tour-guide. They were a freshman business major that was serving as a student ambassador. They first showed us around some of the student common areas such as cafes and lounges, though they mentioned that most of the cafes are frequented more by faculty than students due to the expense. Next, we went to the back of the campus to see the statute of the founder and three of the original buildings, which are still in use today. They talked about the history of the statue, and how it had been torn down multiple times between the Japanese occupation and Korean war, but the podium was still original so you could see the bullet marks from the battles. Then it started raining so we ran to the business department’s building to get a reprieve from the rain and tour some of the classrooms. The business building is one of the newest constructions which means it has a very nice design that is welcoming to students.  After the tour ended, we grabbed some snacks while we waited to visit the professor’s lab. I got a waffle with Nutella and ice cream, it was out of this world. Then we went to the professor’s lab where we were shown what experiments they are doing with mice to gain a better understanding of Alzheimer’s and brain structures. Then we were able to ask the undergrads about what student life was like and how they enjoyed working in the lab.

Today was another fun day and I look forward to visiting Bukchon and visiting the surrounding areas.
