Casey and Soyosan (Day 9)

We left the hotel at around 8:30 in the morning for our visit to Camp Casey. Upon arrival we parked the bus and met up with Pitt alumni who were currently stationed at Camp Casey. The alumni, Will and Grace, gave us a tour of Camp Casey where we saw the barracks, dining facilities and training fields. We also visited the motorpool where all the military vehicles were being worked on. I thought the striker vehicle we saw was really cool because of how many people could fit inside and the grenade launcher on top. We got to see equipment that the soldiers used on missions and learned what each equipment’s purpose was. I was amazed that some of the soldiers had to walk miles in enclosed suits with 30 lbs tanks on their backs during some of their missions. We learned a little about the daily life for people living at Camp Casey, most of them having to wake up before 6 am everyday. After the tour of the camp we had lunch in the impact zone which is one of the dining places. I had pizza for the first time in a while with a sprite.

Afterwards we headed back to the bus to our next destination which was Mt. Soyosan. This hike was mostly stairs and inclined pathways to a temple part of the way up the mountain. After about a 30 minute walk we made it to the temple and took some cool pictures of the waterfall. I looked around the souvenir shop as well. After pictures we headed back down the mountain and back on the bus. To end the day I got snacks from the convenience store and checked out a nearby bookstore in my freetime.

Tomorrow is a day I know a lot of people including myself have been looking forward to as we get to visit the DMZ.
