Shipping To & From Limassol

Today, as always, we left at what felt like the crack of dawn, but it was actually just a quarter after eight. In our best business casual attire, we arrived at the Port of Limassol to be treated to a variety of presentations and tours by the companies operating on the site. First on the itinerary was the Cyprus Port Authority, which acts as the regulator for the three other companies operating at the port. Working in tandem with the government of the Republic of Cyprus to foster growth and efficiency in the efforts to make Limassol a leading port in the region.

With the government of Cyprus, the CPA has sold operations of the Port of Limassol to three companies. The first we visited was DP World, which primarily handles the passenger terminals and non-container specific cargo in the port. Without a hop, skip, or jump, P&O Maritime Ltd also gave an excellent presentation; they manage all marine services in the port. P&O, as a third services provider, has to properly manage its staff and equipment efficiently to meet the demand of the fifth largest island nation in the world. After a what quick but quaint tour of their area of the port we where given a presentation by the final company of the day EuroGate. Which is the sole handler of all container based shipping in the port. EuroGate’s speed was surprising to see firsthand as I intially expected the movement of shipping containers to move at a snails pace. However, they were hoisting them up onto this one ship like it was no challenge at all. It was interesting to learn how recent events such as the Covid-19 Pandemic and recent conflicts in the Middle East have left Cyprus rebounding currently as the Port strives for continuous growth. Overall it was another great stop in this amazing tour of island, and we did not even have to go far from the hotel to see this time.
