Day 10 – Last Day in Birmingham

Today, I woke up excited for my last day in Birmingham. We were set to visit hospitals specializing in mental health nursing, specifically the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. The nurses there work demanding 13-hour shifts, providing care across various specialist fields in mental health.

Among the specialties we explored were deaf services, eating disorder treatment, psychiatric liaison services, and forensic inpatient care. The deaf services use British Sign Language (BSL), which was banned until the 1970s. Many individuals in the deaf community experience mental health struggles due to isolation and communication barriers. Learning about the history of BSL and its impact on mental health was eye-opening.

Eating disorder treatment involves a comprehensive assessment—physical, psychiatric, and dietary. A strong care plan and patient monitoring are essential for recovery and relapse prevention, but emotional support is just as critical. Patients need encouragement and understanding throughout their journey. Forensic care focuses on patients within the criminal justice system, ensuring they receive appropriate mental health treatment tailored to their specific needs.

The psychiatric liaison service operates as an emergency response team, assisting patients in crisis who may harm themselves or others. Their work involves conducting thorough mental health assessments and risk evaluations to ensure proper care and a safe environment. These professionals play a vital role in immediate intervention, offering critical support when needed most.

Next, we toured the mental health ward, which was surprisingly similar to those in the US. One of the notable features was the safety-focused design of the building. For example, the hallways were long and straight, ensuring patients remained within sight at all times. This design minimizes risk and allows staff to monitor individuals effectively. We had extensive discussions with the nurses, comparing the UK and US healthcare systems. It was fascinating to exchange perspectives and understand the different approaches to mental health care.

The visit provided incredible insight into the complexities of mental health care and the dedication of healthcare professionals in these fields. Seeing the passion and commitment of those working in the field was inspiring and reinforced the importance of specialized mental health services.

After returning to the hotel, I finally had some time to relax. Exhaustion from lack of sleep and constant walking had caught up with me, so I took the evening to rest. Packing my bags, I prepared for the next step, London.
