Day 9: Caution Cement Site

Today we did a lot of different things and saw many presentations. One of the presentations was on Vassiliko Cement Company. They were established in 1963. However the first cement production took place four years later in 1967. They are the largest production unit in Europe. One thing that I found interesting was that aside from water, cement is the second largest most consumed material in the world. This means that Vassiliko Cement Company has a large amount of consumers to satisfy. From the each part the process from the quarrying to the shipping of the cement at their own port, Vassiliko Cement Company is a prime example of vertical integration. Vertical integration is a way for the company to have control over various stages of the supply chain process. They do not rely on other people or companies but rather control the gathering, production, and shipping of their products. I thought that this was interesting because many companies these days do not operate this way. Having their own access to the limestone and clay in crucial for their business so that they don’t have to pay to acquire it. Also having a port close by, allows for cutting cost on transportation and mainstreams the entire process. This company was very insightful and I learned a lot about career options that I could see myself doing in the future.
