Double Ship Management

This morning, we visited two different ship management companies: Bernhardt Shulte and Colombia Group. Both of these companies provided insight into different aspects of ship management and what it might be like to work onboard a ship. First, the Shulte Group was divided into three main areas of focus: ship owning, ship management, and maritime services. The ship management division specifically focused on ships entering and leaving the port, ship maintenance, and technical ship management. Our visit to the Colombia Group reinforced the idea that ship management deals with these categories, especially by mentioning the managing of ships entering and leaving the ports. As far as being a seafarer worker onboard a ship, both of these companies are well suited to provide the proper training required. Specifically, The Shulte Group offers training programs in equipment and vessels, STCW courses, simulation training, and more. Additionally, both groups agreed on some of the pros and cons of working on a ship. For example, while the work days are often long and hard, workers do get time off, and they can really get close with their crewmates. They also get free meals every day in the galley. Overall, seafarer workers seem to get treated well.
