A long but Important Day

on

Today we had one of our longer planned days as well as our first company visit. As a group we took a guided tour through parts of Athens. The older parts of the city had some of the best scenery that I have ever seen in person. Later in the day we traveled down to Ellinikon again, specifically to meet with LAMDA Development, the company organizing the huge project. During a talk given to us by a few of their employees I was seriously impressed by the work of their software engineer. He, along with his colleague gave helped us to gain a basic understanding of BIM and GIS. BIM, or Building Information Modeling, is basically a smart 3D modeling process that brings together everything you need to know about a building, from design all the way through to construction. GIS, or Geographic Information System, on the other hand, is a pretty cool tool that maps and analyzes real-world data, helping us understand how everything connects geographically. What really impressed me was the detail of the GIS that the software engineer showed us, there was a 3d model of an entire city that had accuracy down to in believe 3 cm. He could show us almost any statistic that we could think to ask of as well. Seeing how useful and important this tool was really made me realize that I should begin to familiarize myself with this kind of technology. Especially since the Engineer highlighted how soon the technology will become even more advanced.
