Bilbao Day 3 on the Sea!

This morning we headed over to Hospital Gorliz by bus. We got to Hospital Gorliz around 10 am. We started off the hospital tour with a presentation about the hospital and its origins from the staff. It was really interesting to learn about the history of the hospital. One of the things that I found very interesting was that it was originally nuns who were the nurses of the kids. I think it’s cool that the nuns were also trained as nurses. This presentation and talk was honestly one of my favorite parts of the tours because we were able to ask the nurses and administration different questions about their experiences and their lives. I asked a lot of questions…One of the most interesting things I learned is that despite having socialized medicine, they really don’t have long wait times for their patients to be seen. I found this very cool to learn because I know a lot of other countries with socialized medicine have a serious problem with having patients being seen in a reasonable time frame. I loved being able to talk to the nurses and administration of Hospital Gorliz. After the presentation we got to take a tour of the hospital. We saw different wings and different staff. One of my favorite parts was being able to see Oreka-Balance and being able to test it out myself. I love how the medical staff and the engineers came together to make a device to help patients. I thought it was very interesting to also hear about how the stroke patients are doing on this machine. I think a core part of Hospital Gorliz is being by the ocean and I think that honestly makes the entire atmosphere of the hospital setting more refreshing and motivating. I would love to work at a hospital like hospital Gorliz.

After our hospital visit we walked along the ocean to get lunch. We ended up stopping at this place where we had the most amazing paella. The paella had octopus, muscles, and prawns. The waitress was so nice and welcoming. I also had a vegetable stew for an appetizer. I am honestly still thinking about that paella. After we finished our lunch we headed back to the hotel on the metro. I love how efficient and effective the public transportation system is here. After we got back to the hotel I decided to take a nap with my free time. This was honestly one of the best naps I’ve had. After being rejuvenated from my nap we headed to dinner all together. We had many cool different appetizers and then I got veal for my main entree with red peppers and potatoes. For dessert I had traditional Basque cheesecake. I loved being able to try another traditional Basque food. We had a nice long relaxing dinner and then we headed home for the night.
