I started off my day with an early breakfast. I had fruit, turkey, and eggs. I also had a large cup of coffee. We headed off to the engineering building for some presentations. Our first presentation was given by Inigo Ruiz a nurse, researcher, and professor at the university. He explained what the healthcare system was in Spain, Europe and asked us about the United States’ healthcare system. We talked about the different healthcare models in Europe. We learned about the Beveridge and Bismarck healthcare model in Europe. He also explained research that he conducted for his thesis. He explained how he came across an article from a doctor at the University of Michigan regarding reusing pacemakers, so he reached out to him. This eventually led him to mimic what this doctor was doing and get pacemakers from funeral homes and test their battery. He found recipients in India to receive the pacemakers and be able to use them because most of the time the pacemakers had enough battery but weren’t able to be reused in Spain because it’s illegal. After this presentation we had a presentation from a professor of Mechanical Engineering: Mikel. In this presentation we learned about the steps of developing a medical device. We talked about trial and error and saw many different examples of medical devices. We went into deeper discussion on prosthetic limbs and their design process.
After this we had lunch. We had another amazing 3 course meal at the University. I started with seafood risotto, then beef meatballs, and finished with a chocolate cake. After this we went back to the classroom and had a presentation about a workshop that we will be doing on Monday. We got split into groups and were assigned a specific problem to think of a solution for. My group got bedsores. We started brainstorming and then we headed over to a restaurant for cooking class. My group was second for the cooking class so first we walked around in the pouring rain and eventually found our way shopping. It was eventually our time to begin our cooking class. We started off with preparing the ingredients for the tortilla. We next worked on making the ingredients for the dessert and then assembled our pintxos. My favorite was probably the egg and shrimp pintxos with the spicy mayo on it. After making dinner we headed back to the hotel for an early night.
