Day 3 in Bilbao! We started the morning by heading out of the city toward Gorliz, where we visited a hospital right along the coast called Hospital Gorliz. The setting alone was incredible! Being so close to the ocean and beach created a wonderful atmosphere not usually associated with hospitals. Once inside, we were introduced to how the hospital operates and the way they approach patient care. We learned a lot about how the hospital used to be a child rehabilitation center, but now includes adults. A lot of what they describing was interesting to compare to what we’ve learned back home. There were clear differences in structure and training, especially when it came to how nursing education is organized. We then split into smaller groups and toured different parts of the hospital. My tour guide was Pedro. He was very knowledgeable and shared with us a lot of interesting things in the hospital. One of the highlights was seeing the room for occupational therapy. It was really cool to see rehabilitation in action!
We also got to see the Oreka-Balance machine in person. It really showed how closely engineering and healthcare work together in ways you don’t always think about. Walking around the hospital was also an experience in itself. All the windows were open and the natural lighting was refreshing.
After the visit, we walked along the coastline toward a nearby town. We had lunch at a local restaurant and I had paella. It was so good! Definetly my favorite food yet!
We then took the metro back to Bilbao, which was surprisingly easy to navigate and way more efficient than I expected. We ended the day with a group dinner. We were there for 3 hours sitting and chatting. It was a great time to catch up and talk about everything we’ve seen.
