Costa Rica’s focus on sustainability is honestly inspiring and something that sets them apart from many other countries. I think it was a genuine way to help their country and it seems very progressive to me. For example, we learned that Costa Rica lost a lot of its forest, but through its conservation efforts, it came back. It makes me excited to see the way they implement this in person rather than reading a book or hearing a presentation about it.

When researching Costa Rica and its sustainability practices, I found many initiatives they use. One major initiative is their renewable energy. Costa Rica is known for how much renewable energy they use, as it makes up 99% of their electricity. This is generated from sources like hydropower, geothermal, and wind. Another initiative is their conservation efforts. They try to conserve the land by expanding protected areas. Over 25% of the land and 30% of marine areas are under protection. Protecting these areas protects both the wildlife and the ecosystems of Costa Rica.

I am excited to go to Costa Rica to experience life outside of the United States. I am excited to see the rainforests and experience the culture. Overall, I think the trip will be very eye-opening and will help me create some unforgettable memories.
