We started off our day in the School of Engineering and we attended two presentations. The first presentation was about the nursing program at the local university and in Europe in general, and it was interesting to compare and contrast the American and European nursing school programs. We also learned about the reusable pacemaker research being done by the nursing faculty alongside other colleagues. The next presentation was about how to design a medical device. It was intriguing to learn about the entire process of coming up with an idea, designing it, and implementing it to clinical trials. I enjoyed hearing about the specific roadblocks and problem solving that the Oreka-Balance machine research team had to do throughout the design process.
After our morning in the school, we took a journey with the metro to reach our fantastic cooking class. There, we made lots of pintxos. First we made tortilla, and I helped with cutting the potatoes into peeled squares. We also made two types of skewers, one with anchovies, olives, and peppers, and the other with shrimp, egg, and spicy mayo. Although I am usually not the biggest fan of anchovies or olives, I did eat my pintxo and there was definitely an interesting culinary dynamic between the two. We also made a cream cake-like dessert that sat in a coconut shell which was incredibly delicious. All of my food was a 10/10, and it was exciting because I successfully made food that I had seen and tried already all throughout Bilbao.
Following our culinary experience, we received a quick tour of Casco Viejo’s shops and one of the main busy streets. It was a calm and peaceful conclusion to our day in Spain!
