Day 4: Can’t Wait for More!

On day 4, we visited Hospital Quironsalud Bizkaia where we were introduced to serveral rehabilitation technologies and assistive medical devices. One of the most impressive demonstrations was the Hank exoskeleton designed by Gogoa Mobility Robots, which is used to treat patients with mobility and rehabilitation needs. The device served as a link between engineering and healthcare working together to improve patients’ quality of life. We also explored other rehabilitation technologies being developed and used within the hospital setting, such as a game used to test response times to flashing buttons. Later, we attended a presentation titled “Birthing of Digital Twins for AI & a Glimpse of the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering” by none other than the one and only Dr. Prof. Steven Abramowitch. The presentation dived into women’s health and the lack of research within the field as a whole. He spoke on topics such as pelvic floor disorders and the anatomy and mechanics within the female pelvis and reinforced the urgency in increasing funding and research for this field. To end the day, we walked all 241 steps of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe! The coastal scenery was absolutely breathtaking (literally) and I enjoyed learning about the historic landscape.
