Day 5 – Take Me Out to the Demilitarized Zone

Today, we took a bus over to the DMZ. With an armistice agreement in 1953 to “end” the Korean War, the demilitarized zone was demarcated, establishing a tentative peace between the nations. Despite this, multiple infiltration tunnels were found by South Korea, clearly showing North Korea was preparing for an invasion. We went to one such tunnel: Tunnel 3, found in 1978. The tunnel itself was quite damp and very claustrophobic, reminding me why I have no interest in spelunking down in caves. Despite the depth, moss was able to grow on some of the walls, showing that where there is a will, there is a way. We went to the observatory, and a couple of us were looking at some of the towns with a pair of binoculars from Dom. We ended the DMZ trip with some nice free ice cream, though I had bought the exact same ice cream at the observatory just a few minutes earlier. I also bought a monkey wood carving keychain for my sister.

After the DMZ, we went straight to the baseball game at Gocheok Sky Dome. It was unfortunate that we were at an indoor stadium, but I thought it wasn’t much of an issue. We started by eating our meals. My group ordered the smoked chicken for Jake, which was nice, but I also enjoyed some of the fried chicken with the sauce. The food was really messy, so we had to improvise with a bone bag and use up all our wet wipes in an instant. When I went to wash my hands, because the sinks are so low, I accidentally dropped my Hechi bottle from my side pocket, and it dented. Aside from this tragic incident, I enjoyed the game. The first 6 or so innings ended 0-0, though KT Wiz quickly gained upwards of 4 runs in just 2 innings, taking a commanding lead if the rest of the game was anything to go by. I don’t care much for baseball, but all the fans were so hype, especially the one guy two rows ahead of me

Hechi spotted.
