Peptides and Pretty Views!

on

We began our fifth day in Athens by taking the metro from Omonia to UNIC Athens. At UNIC, we attended a lecture about the chemistry of venoms and peptides, and how they can be used to make drugs, which was especially interesting to me as a chemical engineering student. Something I found especially interesting was that there is a pain relief drug made from the venom of a Conus Magus, or cone snail, that can be used in place of opiates and is not addictive. After the lecture, I went with a group to Monastiraki for some shopping, and grabbed lunch from a sandwich shop there. Afterwards, we made our way back to Kolonaki for a tour of the Benaki Museum. This museum was quite different from everything else that we have seen so far, as it had not only archeological artifacts but also art, clothing, and other items from Greece’s history. The collection also included items dating back to ancient times, all the way to the Greek Revolution, which we had not yet learned about since the other museums have been only ancient artifacts. I really enjoyed getting to see items from the Byzantine and Ottoman eras of Greece. After the tour, we went to Mount Lykavittos, taking a cable car to the top to enjoy the beautiful views of the Parthenon and the rest of Athens!
