Costa Rica’s strong focus on sustainability is one of the things that makes the country so unique and forward-thinking. The country generates almost all of its electricity using renewable energy sources like solar and hydroelectric power. Costa Rica produces nearly all of its electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar power and hydroelectric. Costa Rica values long-term environmental impact compared to short terms impacts.
One major sustainability initiative is its huge network of national parks and wildlife reserves. According to my research, more than a quarter of the country’s land is protected to preserve biodiversity and rainforests. Another initiative that has taken place in Costa Rica is its investment in renewable energy. Costa Rica has operated on 98-99% of renewable electricity for years, which is so much bigger than other countries. The third initiative is the way it promotes ecotourism. They encourage visitors to support environmentally responsible tours, hotels, and conservation programs. My research about Costa Rica’s initiatives makes me appreciate what a special place Costa Rica truly is.
During my research, Tropical Agriculture was a common reoccurrence. As we talked about during class, coffee production is especially important to Costa Rica’s economy. Costa Rica even created climate-focused programs to make coffee farming more sustainable. Bananas and other tropical crops are also tied into sustainable farming techniques.
The main reason I am excited to go to Costa Rica is for all the unique opportunities we will get to experience. I have learned tons this past year in the classroom at Pitt but this experience In Costa Rica will allow me to see how businesses operate up close. All the site-visits and excursions will allow me to learn so much while also having a great time with my classmates.
