Day Six: Hospital visit and Guggenheim

on

We started the day just as early and if not a little earlier than the day before! We went to visit Hospital Basurto which was a giant hospital with many different buildings. We began with a presentation from some nurses and an engineer. We learned a little bit of background on the hospital itself as well as about healthcare in Spain in general. We also got to learn about the two platforms the engineer designed for nurses to use to practice picking and using tools in surgery. After these lovely presentations we took a tour of the hospital. First, we visited the neonatal unit where we saw the newborns that had to stay overnight as well as the technology they use to keep them alive. Then we moved onto the labor and delivery unit where they had a monitor that showed all of the contractions and vitals of the mothers in the hospital. Next was the ICU which was very cool to see the new vs the old part as well as all of the technology and organization of the equipment/materials. (also the fact that it could get up and running in two hours). Then we had a little coffee and pintxo break! Then right back to the tours with a walk through the underground tunnel system that holds all of the electricity, air conditioning, water supply, and everything we don’t see. It was fascinating to see how much goes into keeping the hospital up and running as well as how quick they can fix crisis like a power outage. Finally, we ended in the microbiology lab which was made of an assortment of negative pressure rooms. It was where they process samples and test for different viruses/bacteria (We got to see some tests that we learned in school). Overall, this hospital experience was amazing and I enjoyed it very much!

Next we went to have lunch at the School of Engineering and I got rice and garlic chicken! After this we saw the racer that the engineering students at the university were building for the upcoming competition. I am not an engineer so I didn’t understand all the parts and other things that were being talked about but it was very cool to see! Then, we walked to the Guggenheim Museum! We walked around the museum for an hour and saw some of the modern art exhibits that they had. It started to pour rain and we were stuck inside so we grabbed a quick cup of coffee to wait!

We ended the day with a group dinner and a walk around town! I got a burger and it was delicious! It was a great day and I can’t wait for tomorrow!
