Wind Turbines and Medieval Cities: Day 5

on

Our day started with a lecture at the University of Twente about wind turbine design and the physics behind them. We then took a sustainability walk around campus and explored the different ways Twente used energy efficiently. We then had our site visit for the day at the Pure Energie wind farm in Flevoland. We learned about the energy market in The Netherlands and the construction of wind turbines. After the visit we stopped in the historic town of Elburg and learned about medieval Dutch history.

Some interesting sustainability aspects we learned about yesterday was the cooling lake that the University uses instead of A/C and the way the Dutch uses renewable energy. The wind farm generates 600 megawatts of electricity which is an incredibly large amount. It’s so much that sometimes the company has to pay to get rid of the energy, or store it in batteries.

The town of Elburg was also very interesting. The way they constructed the moat around it and defensive fortifications was really cool to see. The city was very quaint and friendly for visitors.
