Day 1 – The Beginning of a New Adventure!

After a long day of travel, first to Atlanta, and then to Buenos Aires, we finally arrived at the site of our two week study abroad experience. Shortly after checking into the Park Royal City Hotel, we headed over to the IES building, where we were kindly greeted with a welcome lunch. We were served several types of meats, including a yummy chorizo sandwich and finished the meal with a delicious dulce de leche ice cream for dessert. As we ate, we enjoyed views from the balcony overlooking Buenos Aires. The staff has already been incredibly kind and welcoming.

My first impressions of the city were different from what I had expected. Buenos Aires is unlike any city I’ve ever seen before. There were many beautiful, historic looking buildings mixed with the subtropical feel of palm trees.

After lunch, we accompanied one of our group leaders, Dr. Martzolf, for an unofficial mini tour of the city. I immediately noticed that the style of the city varied street by street. The roads were not busy at all. There weren’t many cars, but lots of motorcycles. I had a great time getting a sense of the place I’ll be spending my next two weeks.

To end our day, we went to Guerrin Pizzeria for dinner. After hearing about it all over social media, we had to try it for ourselves. The pizza was amazing and very different from American pizza. I can’t wait to continue exploring the food all around Buenos Aires.

Landing in Buenos Aires wasn’t the only big event of today. Today also happens to be Mother’s Day. Although I’m so happy to be here, I can’t help but miss my mom on the day meant to celebrate her. My mom is one of the most hardworking people I know, and I’m so grateful to have someone like her to support all my endeavors, including this trip.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom! I miss you already!
