Day 08: POSTECH

Today we visited Pohang University of Science and Technology, also known as POSTECH. Before this trip, I honestly did not know much about the university, but after today, I was really impressed by everything I learned there. At the beginning of the visit, we attended a presentation where they explained the university’s rankings, funding, research achievements, and overall impact. I was surprised to learn that, even though POSTECH is a relatively new university compared to many others, it has built a strong reputation for research and innovation. It was really inspiring to see how much they have achieved in a shorter amount of time.

The campus itself was beautiful and huge, spanning around 1.6 million acres. One thing that really surprised me was how advanced and research-focused the university was. They even had an Apple Developer Academy and facilities related to semiconductor manufacturing and advanced technology research. Seeing all of this made me realize how important POSTECH is in the field of science and engineering in South Korea.

After the presentation, we explored different parts of the campus, including the computer and electrical engineering departments. There, professors and researchers introduced us to projects involving artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction, which I found really interesting. It was fascinating seeing how technology is being developed to better connect humans and machines in more efficient and interactive ways.

Later, we got the opportunity to meet and have lunch with a couple of students from POSTECH. Honestly, this was one of my favorite parts of the day because the students were incredibly kind and welcoming. I really enjoyed talking with them about student life, academics, and their experiences at the university. Lunch was also really good, and it felt nice getting to connect with students who study there.

After lunch, we visited several electrical engineering research labs where researchers explained the different projects they are currently working on. One of the labs focused on antenna-related research and advanced communication systems, which was very interesting to learn about, even though some of the concepts were pretty advanced.

One of the coolest experiences of the day was visiting the quantum computing lab. I had always heard about quantum computers, but seeing one in person was completely different. I was shocked when they told us that the quantum computer we saw cost around $ 3 million. Learning about how quantum computers work and why they are so powerful and expensive was honestly fascinating.

Later in the day, we also visited the particle accelerator facility, which was another really memorable experience. I found it very interesting how they explained the process of generating energy and conducting experiments using particle acceleration. Seeing such advanced scientific equipment in person made the experience feel very exciting and educational.

Overall, today was a really inspiring and educational experience. Visiting POSTECH exposed me to so many new technologies, research opportunities, and innovations in engineering and science. From artificial intelligence and quantum computing to particle accelerators and semiconductor technology, the entire day made me even more excited about the future of technology and research. I had a really great time and learned so much throughout the visit.
