Today we had classes teaching us the Moroccan language and bargaining skills. I honestly fully enjoyed both classes, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be the bargaining skills.

In our first class, a professor taught us commonly used words and phrases. I loved the way we practiced by slowly adding more and more onto a basic conversation because, by the end, I realized I was almost able to have a full conversation in the language.

After this class, we learned about different skills and strategies we can use when bargaining. Then we went out and practiced bargaining with 30dh. Not only did I successfully bargain a ceramic bowl down from 50dh to 30dh, but I was also able to get two medium-sized purses for 280dh. The man selling them was so nice and had a conversation with me about his family, who handmakes the bags. He originally said 200dh for one bag and 400dh for both. I used the tip from class about starting at half the asking price, so I offered 200dh for both. We were eventually able to meet in the middle at 280dh for both! I was so happy because now I can give one to my mom as well. I was also happy for paying attention during class because I was able to take what I learned and use it successfully.

I also can’t lie, my host family’s sister is the best bargainer I’ve met so far. We went out shopping together, and she was able to get all the best deals, even getting the bag she wanted for only 100dh. I’m so glad I’m being hosted by a family who loves to shop as much as I do!
