Day 2 in Rotterdam: Delta Works

on

Today was a super cool experience as we visited Delta Works which protects the Netherlands from water. We began the day with breakfast at the hotel and then departed on an hour-long bus ride to Delta Works.

When we got to Delta Works, we had 30 minutes to explore. During this time, we were able to watch a simulation of the worst flood in the Netherlands which resulted in around 1800 dead. After this we watched a movie about the history of Delta Works. Delta Works is a series of construction projects that protect land from water. The key difference between these projects and a traditional dam is that Delta Works has walls that can be raised or lowered depending on the water level. This feature is what makes Delta Works so sustainable as tidal seawater can still flow in, which benefits the fish and bird life. This ultimately protects the land with less harm to the environment and local fisheries than a traditional dam. We then had a tour around Delta Works and continued to learn more about the project and how it was accomplished. The coolest thing I learned is how innovative this project is because it was the first of its kind. After the guided tour we took a boat tour which allowed us to see all the windmills. A cool fact is that the windmills are able to power 80 percent of the homes in the region. The dams however are still run on diesel as this is the most reliable because it does not depend on the wind. After this we had more time to explore so went to the aquarium, wind tunnel and an outlook where you can see the dams and the sea.

After Delta Works, we returned back to the hotel and had the rest of the night to ourselves. I ate a gyro for dinner and relaxed the rest of the night.
