Day 9- The Sore System

We started off our day at the School of Engineering. We were in the biomedical engineering laboratory and learned from a research group their research in wheel chairs and sensors. We learned about the research they were doing in developing sensors to detect pressure in wheel chairs. It was cool to be able to hear from a different research team. After this we started off with a brainstorming exercise drawing different things from pictures on a paper. It was cool because everyone drew different pictures from the images on the paper and it was interesting to see the variation in drawings. After this we started talking about our specific prototype. I was on the team that was put with mitigating bedsores. We decided to design a hospital gown that has temperature sensors inside it so that when the patient is laying it will alert the nurses when there is an increase in temperature. This is helpful because high temperatures can be associated with bedsores and moisture. This way if the nurses detect a change in temperature they can investigate that specific area and see if it looks different. This technology was designed to work in tandem with a current invention of beds with pressure sensors and vents. This way if a certain higher temperature is detected the bed can move its pressure to adjust properly. I also really liked being able to present our prototype and hear other peoples opinions and questions. I think we heard a lot of different things that we either hadn’t thought about or didn’t know. This showed me that different opinions and people are crucial to designing a prototype effectively. I really liked being able to talk out a proper prototype and then also design it.

After our design presentation we headed over to the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum in the pouring rain. One of the first images we saw was the first painting of Bilbao back in the 1800’s. It was cool to be able to see how different it looked back then. I also really liked how large the image was I thought it was very unique. After this we got a tour of Denise Scott Brown’s gallery. She was an architect who looked at many different cities. She spent a long time in Philadelphia which I would very interesting, because I am from Philadelphia. She drew lots of blueprints of Philly and Las Vegas. One of her main observations of Las Vegas was that it is designed to be seen from the street. She explained that the buildings looked a lot bigger from the street than they actually were in reality. She said that Las Vegas was like a form of an amusement park. We finished the tour and then headed home.
