Today was another fun day in Bilbao! We started off by doing our workshop! My team was tasked with creating a method to increase dignity during defecation for hospital patients who need to use a bedpan or diaper. We decided to redesign a bed for hospice patients that is mostly hands-off for the nurses. The mattress would be divided into four sections with two of the pieces being in the middle of the mattress. When the patient needs to use the restroom, the nurse would pull apart the center to pieces of the mattress to reveal a toilet seat and toilet under the bed which would rise to meet the bottom of the patient. Attached to the toilet seat would be a bag for sanitation and a bidet to reduce contact from the nurses. When the patient is done using the bathroom, the nurse would then return to the room to reset the mattress pieces and take out the bag with the waste, and then replace with a fresh bag. We would also include an air freshener system to decrease the amount of fumes. Also, we designed the bed to be more like a home bedroom instead of a hospital room to conceal the toilet equipment and make the patient feel more comfortable.
After our presentations, we visited a fine arts museum with many interesting exhibits. There were beautiful paintings of Bilbao, a 3D crochet piece, and a picture that looked like a grassy hill from far away, but up close was many individual lines of color. There was even an Andy Warhol painting, which was cool to see the Pittsburgh artist’s work in Spain. After the art museum, we went shopping for clothes! Again, it was another fantastic day in Bilbao!
