May 12: From IT to Ice Cream

Today it was really interesting getting to compare two completely different business models through Kyndryl and Dos Pinos. Kyndryl felt very global and innovation-focused, while Dos Pinos felt more centered around community and cooperation. At Kyndryl, a lot of the discussion focused on technology, collaboration, and working with people from all over the world. One thing that stood out to me was hearing about how employees constantly work with international teams and learn from different cultures and ways of solving problems. Even though Kyndryl is a huge multinational company, it still seemed like they care a lot about their employees and creating opportunities within Costa Rica. They talked a lot about training, certifications, career growth, and how Costa Rica has become increasingly important for areas like cloud migration and networking. I also thought it was interesting that they emphasized sustainability through things like reducing water consumption, being mindful about AI energy usage, and planting trees to help offset emissions.

Dos Pinos had a very different feel because the cooperative model seemed much more directly tied to local farmers and communities. Since the company is owned by Costa Rican farmers, it felt like the people involved in the business are also the ones benefiting most from its success. Their focus on sustainability also felt very genuine and built into the way the company operates day to day. Overall, I think both companies create value for Costa Rica in different ways. Kyndryl brings professional opportunities, global connections, and investment into the country, while Dos Pinos keeps a lot of its benefits tied closely to local communities and agriculture.
