May 12th – Milk and Computers

We got to visit two different parts of the Costa Rican business world today, both equally important to not only Costa Ricans, but also us in the United States and other countries worldwide. After visiting both Kyndryl and Dos Pinos, I think both companies create value for Costa Rica, but in their own respective ways. On one hand, Kyndryl brings high-paying jobs, investments from other countries, and opportunities for the Costa Rican technology sector to grow. It shows how Costa Rica has become a new place for multinational companies to set up at because of the skills and education of the people. However, in my opinion it seemed clear that many of the biggest decisions will ultimately made where the headquarters are in the United States.

Dos Pinos on the other hand, felt more community based and beneficial to especially the local Costa Rican farmers. Instead of profits mainly benefiting shareholders, the cooperative model is sharing the wealth to the farmers who are producing the goods. This system allows the people making everything possible to share both the risks and rewards. To me, this model creates more long-term value because of the economic benefits flowing right back to the people actually in Costa Rica. Both companies emphasized people and opportunity, but Dos Pinos has a stronger focus on community, collaboration, and supporting local producers.
