My Adopted College: Day Eight

on

I woke up really excited today, as today we are visiting Postech. Before the trip, I researched Postech and discovered that the university was very strong and received a ton of funding. After learning more from a professor’s introductory presentation, however, I realized that this university rivaled some of the most prestigious universities from the United States. The students at Postech start doing research in their first years, and they participate in some incredibly advanced laboratories. Postech offers twelve majors, and it is ranked in the top one hundred in the world in ten of those majors. The university is heavily focused on engineering and computer science, making the college perfect for us to visit during our trip.

In the morning, we learned about a computer science professor’s research. While doing research for her PhD in the United States, she focused on systems designed for healthcare purposes. Her AI chatbot helped communicate with a much larger range of people, allowing more to get medical attention from doctors that might be too far away or otherwise unavailable. I thought that this was a great idea, and I know that it could be implemented in the United States for great benefit to all.

At lunch, we ate with some Postech students inside an Esports dome. This was my favorite experience of the trip so far. I ate with a sophomore studying computer science named David, and we had a lot in common, related to our academic, athletic, and personal lives. I also played clash royale against him, although I lost two games to one.

In the afternoon we continued to walk around, exploring many different areas. We toured many labs and some of the beautiful campus, and we saw multiple electron microscopes, a clean room, and even a particle accelerator. It was so interesting learning about synchrotron radiation, and how it allows for extremely high-definition imaging. This modern version of the particle accelerator is only one of a few in the world, so we were super fortunate to tour it. I was astounded at how advanced the Postech campus was, including a variety of smart systems along with the equipment, and I was glad to learn more about the future of research.

That night, I was part of a large group that went to Yeongildae beach. We ate at a nice restaurant, where I had some lemon shrimp, and I walked with a few people along the beach front. We then went to the Benne café, where I tried an apple mango bingsu dessert.
