The Port of Piraeus

on

On our journey today in Greece, we had a lecture about supply chain with Dr. Elias Yfantis of the University of Nicosia. This taught me a lot and after this we took a trip to the Piraeus port. We went through all the different piers by bus and was able to see everything close up. This was really cool and interesting. To start, the scale of the port was unlike anything I had seen before. Usually, in pictures it is really hard to judge just how big something is, in this case the containers and the ships were absolutely massive. In addition to this, the process that the workers would use to load and unload the ships was really cool using gigantic cranes. Next, I observed just how organized an operation like this is run, for example the rows of containers are very well organized and as such are able to be stacked extremely high. Lastly, on a general note I think that visiting the port has increased my appreciation for how smoothly operations like this are run to be able to keep the world as a whole running smoothly. Overall, I really enjoyed today, and I thought it was really cool.
