After a string of great days this past week, I think day five may have topped them all. Following a quick morning tour around Twente, we boarded a bus and headed out for what were, in my opinion, the two most interesting experiences of the trip so far. After a lengthy ride, we received a personal tour of a massive network of towering wind turbines. Later in the afternoon, we traveled again; this time to explore the historic 14th-century town of Elburg.
The tour of the wind energy farm particularly piqued my interest, and I made sure to pay close attention during the presentation. These enormous wind turbines reach more than 600 feet into the air and, in just one hour, can generate enough electricity to power about 50 homes for an entire year. Even the cranes used to construct these towering structures were incredible; because of their immense size and weight, smaller cranes first had to be assembled in order to build the larger ones used for installation. The team guiding our tour was extremely knowledgeable and provided our group with a wealth of information. This large-scale project, costing hundreds of millions of dollars, represents a significant shift toward clean energy and highlights the remarkable potential of harnessing natural resources. It also demonstrates the strong national commitment to sustainability in the Netherlands as the country continues pushing toward a fully green energy grid.
After spending the afternoon learning about wind power, we were transported once again; this time to the town of Elburg. Founded more than 700 years ago, the town still contains buildings that date back to the 1300s. Elburg holds tightly to its historic roots, with strict regulations in place to ensure that buildings remain as close as possible to their original form.
Visiting Elburg also highlighted how important history is to Dutch culture. People here clearly take pride in their heritage and prioritize preserving pieces of the past. This dedication can be seen not only in Elburg, where many buildings are centuries old, but also in Amsterdam and in the preservation of historic windmills across the country.
Today was an incredible experience. I had the opportunity to learn about the future of energy through modern wind turbines while also immersing myself in the deep and complex history of Elburg. The Netherlands seems to strike a beautiful balance between embracing new ideas—like renewable energy—while still preserving the rich traditions and history that define the country.
