This morning, we visited a cement power plant owned by a company called Titan. Here, we met chemical engineers, chemists, and mechanical engineers. We finished our day with a visit to the “Eleftherios Venizelos” International Airport. At first, one may not think they have anything in common. However, once I was immersed in both work environments and learned more about each companies’ goals, they were a lot more similar than I first thought.

A commonality seen between the companies was their impressive efforts made towards sustainability. Another important similarity that stood out to me was the commitment to safety for their workers and others. As an engineer, I can contribute to sustainability efforts by designing products to have less emissions, use less or alternative energy, and minimize waste. Another way I, as an engineer, can positively impact society is ensuring safety is at the forefront of my decision making process. Seeing this practiced at large companies like Titan and the airport showed me how important safety is in the workplace. In the future, I can design systems and/or products that reduce risk and reinforce safety precautions. Together, these companies showed me the importance of maintaining sustainability and safety in the workplace.
