Monday was another early morning, getting used to it now. We had our usual morning breakfast at the hotel, then hit the town to go on a chocolate experience by Yumbos, trying different flavors and learning about the history of chocolate and how they make it. We then explored Quito, getting lunch at a traditional “Almuerza” spot, where we enjoyed a pre-set meal of soup, chicken, and rice, and dessert. Later that evening, we traveled to the Bios chocolate factory, where Ecuadorian Willy Wonka taught us the ins and outs of chocolate making while we tried his favorite flavors he created. He then gave us a tour of the factory while we enjoyed fresh chocolate-covered strawberries and hopped in the assembly line, making chocolates.

After Bios, we got back in the bus and drove to Otovalo, getting treated to a beautiful rooftop dinner overlooking the main plaza and talking about our plans in this next beautiful city. The third morning, we had breakfast in a gorgeous hotel with views of Otavalo and Cotacachi, then headed into town to a restaurant for a lesson on the indigenous people of Otavalo and their traditional garments and things we can buy at the market. We then spent the day at the market, and I spent a BAG on gifts for friends and family. After a delicious lunch in the city, we went back to the market, and I spent more money…

Money was spent on chocolate and goods, but nothing is regretted. I had a great time immersing myself in the culture of Otavalo and bringing a piece of their history home.
