Day Ten: Workshop and Football

on

The day started off pretty early at the School of Engineering! Mikel presented on balance and different system used to measure it. His research was very interesting to learn about and also see how the Oreka Machine came to be. After this, we used one of the measuring systems we learned about, the Berg Balance Scale, to test our own individual balance. For this we were blindfolded and given a list of tasks that we had to try and complete. This included standing/sitting in a chair, transferring from one seat to another, balancing on one foot, stepping onto a stair, and more. Each task was scored and then you were given a final score that indicated your risk of falling. I found this exercise to be pretty neat and fun to test! We then got to see the second prototype of the Oreka balance machine. This one had two separate platforms and more programmed movements.

After this we ate lunch! Here I got a more interesting lunch I started with squid ink rice and then got the scorpionfish! Then, once we finished we saw the rocket club at the university. This club makes frames and motors for rockets and competes with them to see how high they can go. We got to see where they build them as well as some of the old designs/rockets that were used in past competitions.

Next, we took a tour of La Cathedral, which is the football stadium. We saw the field, the press room, the locker room, some of the executive suites, etc. It was cool to be able to see all the parts of the stadium that we usually don’t have access to. The inside was beautiful and kept in very perfect condition. Football is a big part of the culture here and it was fun to see the pride and effort the team/fans put in. At the end, we got to walk around the museum to learn some final history about the team and club in full.

Finally, we ended the day with some souvenir shopping and gelato! Then some of us went for some pizza for dinner! It was delicious! Once again, it was a great day and I am excited to see what we have to do tomorrow!
