Finding Inspiration in Sustainability

on

Today we visited the TITAN Cement Plant as well as the airport operations team at the Athens International Airport. At the cement plant, we heard about the different ways TITAN was trying to reduce carbon footprints, such as using alternative fuel like used tires, dryed sewage sludge, and flexi coke. Additionally, they had machines that that created hydrogen fuel to be injected into kilns, more efficiently raising the temperature to the heat required to form Clinker, a key intermediate in cement construction. The Athens Airport was also very impressive in that it is entirely independent from the energy grid, and all its terminal/building operations are able to be completely powered by a solar farm with a power output of 12000 megawatt hours.

While very different, both sites we visited today were very dedicated to reaching and expanding upon their set sustainability goals to be reached by 2030 and in the further future. In my future work as an engineer, I can also remember to make positive impacts on society through engineering sustainable solutions and keeping in mind long term goals that ultimately make the planet a cleaner and better place to live.
