Starbucks May Have Wi-Fi, but Café Britt Has Flavor

Today we spent we went to Café Britt and learned more about how coffee is made and the business around it.  At home, I am a big coffee drinking, so I had this event circled on my calendar.  During our pre-departure meetings I was fascinated when I learned about how Ticos prepare their coffee.  They have a much slower process which allows the coffee to have a rich taste.  I could taste a clear difference between the coffee I drink at home compared to the coffee I had today.  I sampled many different kinds and enjoyed all of them.  What amazed me most was how some types of their coffee benefitted animals such as sloths or birds.

Café Britts model is highly beneficial for the Ticos and their economy.  After our tour, we had a presentation to learn more about the business side of things for Café Britt.  I was amazed to learn that they had buyers in the Middle East and China.  I thought it was more of a local thing, but all of these exports are very good for the economy.  Additionally, I think it is great for the people because it represents them and their culture very well.  I’ve learned that Costa Rica is a special place that values patience and quality.  Café Britt was a perfect example of both and it is clear that the establishment has had nothing but positive effects on Costa Rica.
