Today was our very last full day here in Bilbao, Spain. We started off our day by visiting the School of Engineering for the last time. Here, we visited the EskuBilbot group. This is a group of students at the University of the Basque Country who are working to design a prosthetic arm. Their work was extremely impressive! We also visited a group that creates their own electric guitars. They explained the significance of their projects and all of the hard work that goes into them. Dr. Professor even showed us some of his guitar skills! After listening to their presentation and chatting with some of the team, we then had our final class meeting with Saioa. We discussed our final thoughts about the differences between the Spanish and United States health systems as well as dived into some of the finer details about the logistical aspects of being a true patient in Spain. We then played a Kahoot pertaining to details of Bilbao that we learned throughout our trip, and I won!
After our final lunch at the school, we took the metro to Getxo where we visited the Hanging Bridge. This is a bridge that goes across a large river and has a sort of gondola/ferry that carries cars over the water while hanging by cables. The weather was definitely not ideal for this visit as it was cold and rainy, but we pushed on anyways. We first learned a little about the history of the bridge and then we had the opportunity to go to the top! We took a glass elevator up to the top and walked from end to end. I thought it was extremely cool and fun, but not everyone agreed. In order to warm up from our windy activity, we went to a cafe where I ordered a chocolate croissant (I don’t want to know how many I had during this trip…) as well as some fresh orange juice.
We then took the metro over to our dinner location, a beautiful restaurant located right on the beach. Although the weather again made the view not as great, we still had an amazing farewell dinner. We followed our dinner up with a bus ride back to the hotel filled with singing many great songs and laughing together, and I cannot think of a better way to end such an amazing trip with such amazing people.
