Today we learned more about the differences between the Spanish and US healthcare systems. One difference is how pregnant women receive care before their due date. In Spain all women attend multiple appointments with their midwife and take tests such as a nuchal translucency scan to make sure their child comes out healthy. However, in the US many women receive little to no care due to things such as a lack of insurance and mistrust of the system. Another thing that was interesting was that in addition to their universal healthcare they also have private health insurance similar to ours. This is usually used for specialties such as the dentist or physical therapy.
Following this we got to visit another student club which was building a prosthetic arm for a competition. They were still in the early stages of development but they showed us a 3D printed prototype of their prosthetic, the mold that they would attach to the user’s arm, and also the motor they would use to move the fingers. Next, we visited another project which was making their own electric guitars. To make the guitars they first design them in Fusion and then cut them out from wood using a CNC machine. Next, they add the actual electrical and magnetic components before putting on the paint and polishing. This was a really cool project because not only did they reuse parts from other student projects, but one of their guitars also got used by a famous band in the Basque Country.
After leaving the school we took the metro to another town to see the Vizcaya Bridge. What was interesting about this bridge was that it was the first bridge to carry people and cars across a river using a gondola. Following that we took the metro again to the beach where our dinner reservation was. Here we had our farewell dinner and said goodbye to Saioa and Mikel who had been with us throughout the entirety of the trip. Finally, we ended the bus ride back to the hotel by doing some karaoke to end the trip with good vibes. This trip was really eye opening as I learned a lot and also got to meet a lot of cool people along the way.
