Day 7: From Exploring Tech Incubators to the Streets of Marrakech

The first thing we started off the day with was a walking tour and we visited a mosque in the center of Marrakech. What really stood out to me about the mosque was the first one was torn down and replaced with the current one so that it could accurately be faced towards Mecca.

After touring the mosque we toured the Bahia Palace. When touring I learned that the inside gardens are called riads. People have the inside gardens because it is very hot during summers so it was a way to have a cooler space. Also all rooms would open to the riads and not the outside for privacy. Riads typically are symmetrical like four gardens and have a fountain in the middle.

Once we finished tours we walked

through the souks and ended up visiting a herb shop. Inside we got to have a discussion about all of their different products they offer and what they are used for. During that we got to sample the products and shop around a bit.

I then shopped around the souks which was an experience. They were very busy and everyone was trying to sell you things. In my option I found the souks of Rabat to be better because they had more unique things but it was fun to compare and contrast the two since we have become familiar with Rabat.

One of my favorite things today was getting a custom bracelet where they wrote my name in Arabic. I really enjoyed the experience because you got to see them write your name out as well as explain it to you and then you saw the hand engraved it with tools.
