Today we spent some time on a Pineapple Tour and then enjoyed a waterfall hike.  Both experiences were new to me, but I had so much fun with both.  The taste of the fresh pineapple was unmatched; I had never tasted something so fresh.  The waterfall hike was also such a great experience with great views.  During my time at the Pineapple Tour, I started to think about the question of why younger people are more interested in tourism than farming.  Our tour guide informed us that the people who did the farming of the crops were from Nicaragua and that they were struggling to find younger Ticos that are interested in farming.

I believe the younger generation is more interested in tourism than farming because younger people are eager to meet travelers from all over the world and practice their English.  With how prominent social media is in today’s society, it gives people a look at what other cultures are like.  I can speak for myself personally, one of the main reasons I decided to go abroad was from all the videos I saw on my social media saying what a wonderful experience it is.  

Additionally, tourism provides experiences that are more enjoyable.  On Friday, my classmates and I visited a local beach.  We meet a few tour guides, and they spoke so highly on their job, saying there were right where they wanted to be.  Making money from showing people your homeland compared to trying to make money from crops is a no brainer for the younger generation.  Farming requires much harder physical work, longer hours, and less predictable income.  With all the wonderful opportunities there are to get involved with Tourism, it makes sense why the younger generation prefers that.
