Day 8: From Buenos Aires to Colonia

Today we visited a small town called Colonia right on the Uruguay border. After an hour boat ride we arrived to one of the most interesting towns I have ever been to.

The architecture in Colonia is especially amazing. Each building is built mainly out of stone and has been preserved over hundreds of years. Even when the Spanish, Portuguese, and Brazilians all ruled Uruguay, this town still stayed in tact. This included a very old church that, even with cracks in the ceiling, is still standing today. During our walking tour, we learned that Chivito is the national dish of Uruguay. During lunch, I was able to try this delicacy first hand. The sandwhich was solid with steak, tomatoes, lettuce, egg, mayo, and even more ingredients. After lunch, we walked around the town and visited some of the local stores where we bought various gifts for our family members. We also saw many dogs running around the town square. These dogs are said to protect the tours as they walk through the town. You can see the dogs barking at the cars as they drive by and get too close to the tour groups.

Finally, our program manager Jason has been very helpful to us throughout this trip and I thank him for that. I really enjoy learning about his experiences he has had around the world.
