Today we learned about Arenal Mundo Aventura and how the company combines adventure tourism with conservation. The presenter explained that most of their visitors come from the United States and Canada, but they are also trying to attract more tourists from Europe. Since La Fortuna is one of the most visited places in Costa Rica, there is a lot of competition between tourism companies. AMA has been in business for 21 years and is known for having the only zipline that flies directly over the La Fortuna waterfall. They own around 1,300 acres of protected forest, and the money from tourism helps them continue protecting and reforesting the land. I thought it was interesting how their business is built around conservation while still creating exciting experiences for tourists.
One thing that stood out to me was how much the company depends on tourism. Around 80% of their revenue comes from the zipline tours, which shows how successful the attraction is, but also creates risk. The presenter discussed many challenges, such as slow tourism seasons, intense competition, and heavy reliance on international travelers. During times like the pandemic, when tourists stopped traveling, businesses like this likely struggled to continue funding conservation efforts. This made me think about whether commercializing nature is the best way to save it. Even though tourism can sometimes harm the environment, in this case, it also provides the money needed to protect the forest. Without tourism, the land could possibly be cleared instead.
Then, after the presentation, we explored downtown La Fortuna, which felt much more touristy than Heredia. We ate at Maria Bonita Steak House, and the food and service were amazing. We then visited Tayajúry Café, where Ashley and Brandon were extremely welcoming and friendly. Throughout the day, I noticed how kind and helpful the workers were, especially in such a busy tourist area. Even though La Fortuna is very focused on tourism, the hospitality still felt genuine and made the experience better.
