Costa Rica Blog Post 8 – 05/18

AMA is interesting because it shows that there are two sides inside ecotourism. On one side, it is a super fun business selling adventure activities (best activity of the trip). People are paying for excitement, views, and an experience in nature. On the other side, that money helps fund conservation and reforestation of the surrounding land. That makes the model feel practical to me. It may not be the “perfect” way to save nature, because nature is still being turned into a product for tourists, but it might be one of the most realistic ways. Conservation costs money. Land has to be protected, workers have to be paid, trails and equipment have to be maintained, and reforestation takes time. If tourism creates the revenue that makes that possible, then commercializing nature can actually help protect it.

At the same time, the model has risks. If conservation depends too much on tourism, then it becomes vulnerable when tourists stop coming, like during the pandemic or during low season. Without visitors, revenue slows down, but the cost of protecting the land does not disappear. That makes me think conservation should not rely on only one source of money. Alternatives could include government funding, donations, research partnerships, carbon credits, education programs, or payments for ecosystem services. i remember during the predeparture meetings we disucssed how the government provides money for companies that support reforestation. While this may not fully replace a dull in tourism, it may be enough to power through. Still, those options are not always reliable either. Overall, I think AMA shows that commercializing nature is not automatically bad if the business is designed carefully. The key question is whether tourism supports the land or slowly damages the thing people came to see. From what we saw, AMA seems to use adventure tourism as a tool to keep conservation financially alive, which feels imperfect but realistic. I think this was a nice way of being in nature and having fun.
