Day 10! Today we went back to the city campus of Austral University! In the morning we had two lectures. The first one was about the public sector of healthcare and it was presented by Dra. Diana Fariña. She had a very diverse background, so the information was very interesting. Next, we had a presentation by Dr. Ruben Torre. This presentation focused on the social security part of healthcare here in Argentina. Then, we broke for lunch and we went to a very cute cafe!
After lunch, we came back for a workshop. During this time, we got to meet with our groups for our final presentation and work on our outline of what we want our project to look like. We were joined by Dr. Vincente Anderegeen who has served as Medical Director at OMINT. He was one of the presenters from yesterday. We presented our outline and got input to help improve the final project that we will be presenting on Thursday.
Federalism is an important part of Argentina’s healthcare system. Because Argentina has a federal system, responsibility for public healthcare is shared between the national government, provinces, and municipalities. This means that healthcare organization and resources can vary depending on the location. Throughout this trip, we have seen examples of this with places like San Isidro and La Matanza, where funding and resources looked very different. This has helped me understand why public healthcare systems can vary so much even within the same country.
Later, we went to a Tango show! This was such an amazing experience, especially because earlier in the week we had gone to a tango class. It was so interesting to be around everyone and to see the culture and performance of the whole show. It was definitely a major highlight of the trip overall.
